As a follow-up to my article about the woodworking plan CD scams, I Googled and searched YouTube a bit more. Man, a search for "woodworking(the numeral 4)home" on Google yields about 284,000 results. Its kind of funny, because next to the search there are several ads for the same "14,000 Woodworking Plans" CD. They all sell the same CD, but are in competition with each other. I would make a wild guess that there are thousands of sites set up selling them.

I really wonder who the guy at the top is? All of the sites claim it is John Metz from Wisconsin. I suspect this is a fictitious name, but someone is making a lot off of this.

Interestingly, that same search, but narrowed to sites within the past few days (since weve been spreading the word), now has sites set up about  "how to detect woodworking scams"...which, of course tell you that there are scammers abound...but the safest thing to do is buy the 14,000 plan CD! Wow, these guys are quick. In fact, if you Google "woodworking scams" guess what sites show up? Yep. Woodworking(4)home.

Firday, my mother and I decided to go to a local salvage house to do some bargain shopping. The place we went to is a large freight companies "scratch and dent" store (AAA Cooper). While there was plenty of interesting things in there I only saw two things that I might could use in my shop.

One was a large roll of heavy duty paper that would be perfect to go on the side of my workbench so that I could stretch a sheet of paper across it when I want to paint or finish something, or just draw something really big. It was only $5 so I picked up a roll that should last a long time. I also grabbed a box of 100 latex gloves for one or two dollars that would come in handy some time or another.

When we were leaving the salvage house I recieved a call from a friend that was at an estate sale where there were alot of woodworking tools for cheap. I decided to ride over and I found some good tools for a good value.

I knew I could definately use some more clamps and every square that I have is a little bit out of square, even brand new ones! This one tested to be right on the money. I think from now on I will test every square before I buy it in the store.

Ive been wanting to tell you about a new and rather unusual website I came across via YouTube. Its Woodgears.ca by a guy named Mattias Wandel. Hes from Canada and an engineer and he makes, amongst other things, machines out of wood. He even makes gears out of wood, which is pretty amazing. I love to watch his videos on YouTube and if youre a woodworking geek you wont want to miss this website.
I wish I lived next door to this guy.

I was gone most of last week on vacation so I didnt get to work on the case much but I got a lot done the last couple of days.  I stopped by Rockler and picked up 2 hinges, 2 clasps, and a handle for it.  I go them all in bronze because that was the only color that I could find all the pieces in.  I would have preferred the aged nickel but oh well.  The outside of the case has 3 coats of Danish oil and now 2 coats of Polyurethane.  The inside tray has 2 coats of Danish oil that needs 1 more day of drying time.  It will then get 2 coats of poly as well.  I trimmed the Lego plates down to fit the inside of the case and have some self adhesive sheets of felt for the insides of the case and the bottom of the tray.  Everything should be ready for my sons party on Saturday.  If all goes according to plan I should have a video out on Monday for the project.

Bringing things up to date -
After 2 solid months of good work and great projects, things are settling down a little.  I have all of the past projects finished (6 in all), and this week I will begin collecting and prepping materials for a new project.  This will be a 15 wide built-in, painted white, in Sylvania, Ohio!  The on site work begins January 3rd, so watch for pictures.  The church cabinets are on going - paying projects take a front seat (although I do not mind doing work for my church).
