Just another MCM

Trying to do a gray thing with this new piece. Only the drawers are finished.

My little feral friend, The Shop Cat, is always there to keep me company.
She was completely enthralled with the sanding process:
I used a homemade chalkpaint to which I added some silver glittery paint additive things.
From Lowes. It makes it look like a quartz countertop in the right lighting.

A pop of pink on the drawers for fun!
Even tho this was chalk paint, for some reason the wax just didnt buff out well. I used
tung oil on the sides and applied 2 coats of acrylic top coat on top for protection.

SPRAY PAINTING A WOODEN CHAIR turquoise wood chair

I wanted to donate this solid little guy to a charity auction event that was coming up,
but the description of eligible bachelors had to have fabric seats.
So he stayed with me.

SWHI - single white
with some hygiene issues

I gave him a good shower, a scrub behind the ears, and worked out some of the rough spots.

I mixed a fun color of turquoise using chalk paint and sprayed him.

There was no creaking or groaning from this guy
because of the metal rods that had been built into the frame work.

The next step to this mini makeover was to sand back some of the paint
layers to expose the thick white enamel paint underneath.

The more I worked at it the more wood I liked showing thru.

Minwax paste finishing wax was used to give him baby soft skin.

My rugged little chair is the perfect addition to my back room,
and thats how you spray paint a wooden chair turquoise.

MY BED IS IMPORTANT bed frame

I was 12 years old the first time I heard there was a problem with my back.
After some x-rays, the doctor told mom and me that I had a defect in my spine and I would not be able
to have a labour intensive job as an adult. Being a child this didnt mean much to me. I was skinny
and fierce, I excelled at all the sports I played, with awards to show for it all.
I was invincible, what did he know.

By the time I was 16 I could feel it and I learned to realize each time I had pushed my back too far.
Over the next few years I learned that a good sleep made things feel much better. This is when my bed became very important to me.

Over the years I always made sure I had a haven to retreat to when the day had been too much.
At the age of 20 I broke my lower back and things progressively got worse.
Thats when my bed started to grow. It was so much easier to slip out of bed straight onto my feet or hop in to bed when it was level with me standing so I started to lift my bed making it taller.

This past summer I built a new queen sized bed frame with no foot board to work better with my
storage box spring. I had my sleigh bed long before I got the box spring and they just didnt work
well together so this was a plan I had for awhile. I started with a plain mid-century double sized
headboard. I lifted it and widened it with some new lumber screwed to the outsides of
the original legs. I made the top wider with these fancy carved chair arms.

Here it is in place, you can barely see any of the details with all of my pillows.
But I know its there and get to see what I built every time I make the bed.

The side rails attach to a 2 x 4 at the foot of the bed with two hardwood cabriolet legs on either side.

So that leaves my Queen Sleigh Bed up for grabs and listed in the SHOWROOM

She is not your average sleigh bed, she is amazing. I was traveling for work when
I bought this bed and therefore she was a huge treat to come home to.

Got some deals on some woodworking supplies!

Firday, my mother and I decided to go to a local salvage house to do some bargain shopping. The place we went to is a large freight companies "scratch and dent" store (AAA Cooper). While there was plenty of interesting things in there I only saw two things that I might could use in my shop.

One was a large roll of heavy duty paper that would be perfect to go on the side of my workbench so that I could stretch a sheet of paper across it when I want to paint or finish something, or just draw something really big. It was only $5 so I picked up a roll that should last a long time. I also grabbed a box of 100 latex gloves for one or two dollars that would come in handy some time or another.

When we were leaving the salvage house I recieved a call from a friend that was at an estate sale where there were alot of woodworking tools for cheap. I decided to ride over and I found some good tools for a good value.

-2 24" clamps $3 each
-2 2 1/2" C clamps $.50 each
-1 heavy duty square $2

I knew I could definately use some more clamps and every square that I have is a little bit out of square, even brand new ones! This one tested to be right on the money. I think from now on I will test every square before I buy it in the store.

Bowl o rama and hand carving a spoon a 2 part posting today

Hi Everyone,

Well, today was a very productive day in the wood shop.  There is a series of bowls that I began making last month that have been drying out and need to be re-cut today and well be doing that in a moment and I also have decided to try to do some hand carving again by carving a wooden spoon for a friend of mine. Since there are so many photographs, Im going to do this as a two-part posting.

Part I - The bowls

Last month, I began a series of bowls that were ordered by a friend of mine for her family and I made the bowls out of hickory, pecan, red elm, camphor, and some other wood whose name escapes me at the moment*. The hickory and pecan bowls have been completed and delivered and this leaves the last three bowls still being worked on.  I rough cut them last month and placed them in drying bags and I took them out last night to look at them and to see if they have cracked or distorted.

Good news-the bowls have all survived the preliminary cutting and drying with minimal distortion. So its time to re-cut them again.

Bowls made out of unseasoned wood will shrink and distort while they dry out. Lets take a look at one of the bowls:

This bowl is the red elm bowl and you can see that its a little longer from side to side than it is from top to bottom. The bowl shrank some while it was in the drying bag. This means the bowl is no longer round in shape but has become oval.  Turning it on the lathe will re-shape it and make it round again. Fortunately the there is enough wood in the walls of the bowl to re-shape it.

This photograph shows the bowl after its been re-cut and made round again:

And I spent a portion of the day re-turning all of the bowls in the drying bag:

You can see how the bowls in the bottom photo have been rounded and the walls and bottom of the bowls thinned out.

These bowls are 10 inches x 3 inches. Here is a photo of a large hickory bowl from last month:

This bowl is longer than it is tall and it still has the potential to distort while drying so I didnt cut it too much.

All of the bowls above will be going back into the drying bag for another month and then Ill take them out and cut them to their final shapes and sizes. Well do this at the end of June.

Ok, my next posting is about the spoon Ive begun making so lets go on to part 2.
